Weequahic Spring Bass on Rattle Trap

So either I am learning more spots in Weequahic Lake or I am spending enough time on the lake to hook a few. Whatever the case may be, I was fortunate to hook into this small bass on yesterday. So far there are three places on the lake that I know produce fish this time of year. And they all have schooling bait fish. Actually I had a really good bite close to shore, but I pulled too hard too quickly. In any case, it was a fun time.

Cat Fish in Weequahic Lake North Jersey

It's the middle of March and I am determined to figure this lake out. A technique that I have been using aside from talking to the veterans of the park is to walk the shore line with a pair of polarized shades and look at the life that is blooming. I've noticed that several things add up to bait fish and life. One, the areas that I have seen have been coves off of the main lake where the current always seem a bit calmer than the actual lake. Two, the lake should have sunny/shallow/muddy parts. It's a three way thing I guess, and the last piece that makes this area is magical in the spring is some sort of run off pipe. Now this is tricky because this lake's water levels are funny. I've seen it too high, last spring and too low during the summer. So in order for this to work in the spring, the water level must be high enough to meet the run-off pipe. And there it is. In these areas I have seen significant bait fish action and carp feeding. Now, how to interpret this? I'm not sure, but I'll be fishing these areas first. On this Saturday I was carping with corn in an area that's generally full of carp in the spring, but no luck except this baby cat.
All in all, it was still a fun time.

March Fishing New Jersey

Man, this is the second year in which I missed the run. I don't know whether it is because I'm too lazy or too ambitious. Last year, a veteran fisher out of Newark New Jersey was fishing the run offs in this lake and he shared with me that as soon as the ice begins to melt and the temperature breaks, fishing becomes hot. And I believed him. Well, he did have pictures, pictures of some big bucket mouths. So I purposed that next year I would not miss it. Fast forward to the end of February when the ice began to melt around the run offs, I fished it several times with no avail. And then the first few days in March, I fished them with no avail, and then, frustrated I stopped. And then on Friday this past week, the 11th I saw him again after one week of not fishing. And this veteran said again, "Man you missed it."   I'm mad and frustrated. lol. One week off and no prize to show. At least I know that they are there.

Sight Fishing in Weequahic Park Lake for Bass!

Ok, I admit that I like to fish, but I really love to catch. I'm not a fan of the old saying of veteran anglers: they say when your not catching "well they don't call it fishing for nothing.." At Weequahic Lake, especially because I'm very new to this lake, I target the fish that I can see. And even at 12:15 pm in the middle of summer, a time where most recommend that you do not fish, you can still catch. If you can see 'em, I am a fervent believer that you can catch em'. This small bass is proof.

There's Fish in Weequahic ?!?!?!

Welcome! Have you ever driven past a lake on the way home from work and smiled. After a hard day of work, probably in NYC or North North New Jersey, where the pace is a constant 100 mph, watching the peaceful flow of water or the lazy lay about of a duck or goose, is relaxing.

Well, you would be suprised to find out, as I was, that it is also possible to fish this lake. And what better treat would be there for you, maam or sir, than treating yourself to an hour or two of fishing after work.
